He woke up nearly a hundred years later to an unknown voice, with no memory of his life before that time and nothing to call his own. He fought many monsters and traveled all across the Hyrule to rid it of the great calamity and return peace to the land. He who, after the beasts were freed of the malice that was Gannon, went off to Hyrule castle to fight to save the princess he died to protect in the first place. Link, one of the greatest heroes in all of history. This song embodies all of that as he fights his way through Hyrule castle to finally defeat Calamity Gannon and save princess Zelda.

  25. Danny Taylor: Speak for yourself, dude. The WiiU may have been a commercial failure, but I still played it a ton, almost as much as my PS4 (which I got around the same time). Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, UnEpic, Captain Toad, New Super Mario Bros. U, Sonic Lost World, Super Smash Bros., and even re-realeses of older games like Deus Ex (the definitive version of that game, even), Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD, I could go on. And for many people, Breath Of The Wild is on that list, too. The WiiU may have been a down note commercially, but Nintendo were still packing heavy punches with it. Breath Of The Wild is just as much the WiiU's swansong as it is the Switch's opening volley. It was built for WiiU. Never forget that.

  56. J.K. Brown: bonus ducks There really isn't anything wrong with changing time signatures. It makes life harder on the conductor, but it helps the music. Once you get used to swapping back and forth though, it feels so smooth! It seems to only happen once every 5-7 measures, the 6th beat signifying the climax of each section. It only changes to a solid 6/4 section during that mashup of the main theme and Zelda's lullaby, which is just beautiful when you think about it.

It was my first divine beast, and listening such a wonderful music after so much time was so rewarding and epic that made the fight 10x more awesome. Though imagine listening to he same piece of music everytime you were in Hyrule Field for example... At some point I would just turn music off to listen to something else because I wouldn't be able to stand it anymore.

  75. Moltakfire: The beat that begins the piece? I actually think of that as the 'heart' that Ganon is in when you see him in the throne room. And the heart beats more consistently as you make your way into the castle.

Naza Hernandez: The first time I played this game I was scared to go into Hyrule castle, I did went in just for the Hylian Shield, and the Memory, afterwards I visited back again for the Shrine and the Royal Guard Sword, I entered from a cave in the South West side of the castle, not swimming but jumping over ice blocks, ugh felt so wrong to do it in such way, but it was a challenge to survive both times I went in, cause I was so unprepared. But just to make it epic after I beat the game, I did another playthrough, bought the Hylian Shield from the guy in Terry Town to avoid even touching Hyrule Castle before time, and then, after having enough hearts, got the master sword, stacked up on all kinds of arrows, went straight for it, through castle town's main gate, destroying any guardian who stood before me, right there and then with this music I felt the real epicness of being the Chosen Hero.

Once this theme played, I immediately loved it and ooh boy, crap was about to get real. My heart get's pumped up when I play this theme. I could listen to it for hours and hours.   89. Natalie Hagler: Ayyy I was extra excited to hear this theme when I first stormed Hyrule Castle since it's time signature alternates between 5/4 and 6/4, which is normally tricky to pull it off. But damn if they didn't pull it off perfectly! It seriously made the experience all the more thrilling, and for a while I couldn't stop counting it in my head! What a cool theme honestly! Props to Nintendo! :)
  90. Victor Mata Verçosa: I agree. Breath of the Wild is a very experimental game, Zelda-wise. Nintendo knows how to create great dungeons and puzzles and all that. We know it for decades. I'm sure the concept behind this game was "what if Hyrule Field is a place itself and not only the road to the next dungeon?" And I love it. The wilderness truly breathes with life and character here. Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword attracted some criticism because of their overworlds, despite being great games. Breath of the Wild goes back to the first Zelda game to push Hyrule to a whole new dimension and I can see it becoming the template for future Zelda games with a return and renewal of the dungeon aspect of the classic games. It can be some sort of reboot to Zelda as we know it.

Fuck all of the Divine Beasts, they were good dungeons but none had a unique atmosphere nor did they give you a grand sense of exploration and tension building like this Castle did. BOTW's Hyrule Castle is the definition of a Castle. Designed to keep those out and it does its job incredibly well. Of everything in BOTW, this dungeon is the best part of it hands down.

Lucas Sinnoh: Not only does the song alternate with 2 bars of 5/4 followed by a 6/4 and a 5/4, but I believe that part of the reason it sounds so normal is that the math adds up such that the first 3 bars are equivalent to 4 bars of 4/4 followed by a 5/4. Essentially, what i believe is the case is that the alternating time signature simulates 4 bars of 4/4 followed by a 5/4, so in total it only sounds like 1 extra beat That was a whopper when I was trying to count out the beats.

  107. Deej: with music like this, it always felt odd to me that Link doesn't take on the castle with a team. Before every divine beast there's a scene with one of the prominent figures of the race you're helping, so just imagine this music behind all 5 of them, storming the castle together and using their combined skills to fight off guardian after guardian while the player leads the march and solves puzzles and challenges and then the castle checkpoints could be rest camps for all of you to gain your strength back, IF you can defeat the lynels and moblins. not only that, but imagine the optional quests you could have to get each member of your team all decked out in armor so they can last longer before needing to take breaks and heal

  110. Wyvern's Den: I've played a lot of Nintendo games in my time, and I absolutely adore them. I love all the classics and newer games as well. But after the failure of the Wii U, I was somewhat saddened. I thought Nintendo had started to slow down and somewhat lose their touch, and that kinda broke my heart, because their legacy was at stake. When the Switch was announced, I was uncertain of its potential. But when I got the chance, I bought one anyway. The first game I got for it? Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Note I never played Zelda religiously, but I did enjoy Ocarina of Time quite a lot. But since BotW had good things said about it, I decided to try it. Needless to say... I was absolutely blown away. The story, the gameplay, the music... were all just phenomenal. All the doubts I ever had about Nintendo were lifted gradually as I played through the game. It was almost as if it was a message from Nintendo personally to say, "We're right here. Don't you worry about us." Although I had to trade in my Wii U to buy the game... it was beyond simply worth it. Final words... only Nintendo can take a blow like marketing failure and create an absolute masterpiece out of the aftermath. My childhood belongs to them and so does my eternal respect.

  123. Super Secret: The more I listen, the more I just love this theme! It's incredible, uplifting even though you are literally in the heart of the darkness and about to confront the Calamity. The music still has a dark vibe but it's more than that, you can feel Zelda's hope in you and the world to final purge the land of Ganon! If only I had the game.... ;-;

ColonelSanic: my guess is it happens something like 10,100 years after Zelda 2, placing it in the downfall timeline, the reference to TP could be viewed as simply a colorful metaphor since to my knowledge it doesn't directly mention anything specifically from that game, but it does mention things from OoT, SS, and of course the classics to an extent.. so it's very hard to say strictly speaking, but that's just my guess.

GameNerd: I don't believe I need to put this here, but there's spoilers of the whole castle in this comment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hyrule Castle was a horror trip for me. Since the release, I had never seen anything from it. Never heard the music, never saw any pics of the place or Ganon. Believe it or not, I didn't knew I was so overpower because most of the game I used to avoid most of the fights for durability purposes. So, I entered Hyrule Castle from behind, as one guy at a stable told me to one day. Sure, I lost all the epicness of entering through Castle Town, but even so, just seeing a guardian laser was enough to make my heart freeze, ya know? It was epic either way. This masterpiece was playing in the background as I tried to avoid the guardians, since I was terrible at perfect parry and, as the Scrooge McDuck I am, didn't wanted to use Ancient Arrows. It was like a survival horror, trying to survive at all costs, feeling real fear at every corner, climbing the tower to Zelda's Room as three guardians tried to shoot me down. I entered the dining hall and started avoiding all enemies almost stealthly searching for the Hylian Shield. Eventually I managed to find it, though I almost died several times to normal enemies along the way. After that I entered a gatehouse to check if there was a chest and a freaking Lynel appeared, and like I said I though I would be over overpowered, so I panicked and escaped as fast as I could as guardians all over the place took aim on me running for the top as thundersbolts from the Lynel was falling down after me. I played this in a way that today I consider to be incredibly wrong, I even remember going to the very top just for fun, but I didn't knew there was ladders inside the towers, so I spidermanned to the top from outside defying physics laws during the way. It was... quite the challenge. Like I said, I believe I've never played something so wrong in my life, but MAN, it was SO F*CKING MEMORABLE. And after depriving myself from information and pics about the game for so long, finally being able to see Ganon and his baddass intro was just the best reward I could possibly ask for. I believe I'll never experience something quite like it again...

  139. BigAlvideos101: The series didn't need breakable weapons, or terrible voice acting, or a high difficulty level, or a stupid armour system! The open world's fine, as is doing dungeons in any order, but it should've had a companion character (at least as an optional thing) to help those players like me who got lost often! If it had been without those things while still keeping everything that was actually good, the game would've been much better! I'm usually not a complainer, but when you wait as many years as we did for BOTW and get riddled with disappointment with a game that doesn't even feel like Zelda because it lacks nearly everything that makes a Zelda game a Zelda game and feels like a random game with the "Zelda" name tacked onto it as a Zelda game in name only, then you get upset! Hopefully Nintendo makes the next game with the things that make Zelda great while also keeping the things that actually worked and stop with the breakable weapons and lousy voice acting with upgradeable armour and a difficulty level that's too damn hard for most of the game nonsense!

  145. JustSome Guy: Imagine how this would sound before the Great Calamity. Keeping the sheer power of the song, but a slightly more upbeat melody. Just imagine if botw had a full composition for the overworld before the calamity, playing for the hero to inspire them to march forward, but it was dashed away with the rest of Hyrule when the hero fell, retired to no more than a couple ambient notes playing occasionally. I'd love for a game to give us a take on what the world was like before the Great Calamity, like maybe it was like any other Zelda game, but Link was defeated with this being Ganon's last stand. All items destroyed or buried with the ashes of the once prosperous kingdom.

Let me describe the chills that went down my own spine as I went through it. -------------SPOILER WARNING FOR SOME OF THE PLOT----------------- As you approach the front gate, past the ruins of castle town, a cutscene plays with you see Ganon flying above, taking notice of your approach fiercely, with Zelda's holy light beaming from the Sanctum. Using your Sheikah Slate, you pry open the front gate, and begin your ascent to Calamity Ganon and Zelda. You immediately notice the Guardian Skywatchers patrolling the area, and a Decayed Guardian up the path. As you go through, you see more Guardians, and eventually come across two Silver Lynels, each in their own small arena. The Guardian Skywatchers are relentless, as it's hard to pin them down with Ancient Arrows. You draw ever so closer to your final battle. The Sanctum lies just ahead. The sky begins to turn red, and Guardian Turrets are laid waste to your now perfected parries. This is it. The final battle against Ganon. It is time to redeem everyone for their failures, including yours. The fate of Hyrule rests in your hands only. It is time to avenge the Champions that fell, and the countless lives that had perished from Ganon's wrath. Zelda has fought for a hundred years, to make sure you can take over. Now, it's time to finish the fight. You enter the Sanctum, to destroy Calamity Ganon.

  267. Cyrmx Stuff: Well, BOTW's focus kind of forces it to have the OST it does. Simply put, the amount of time spent exploring places can be long, and hearing a repetitive two-minute melody for hours on end gets annoying quickly. The game's main focus is setting up a wild, natural atmosphere. That's why there's very little music when exploring; in nature, you don't have repetitive music blaring down your eardrum every second. The kind of music you dream up as you explore is exactly what BOTW's soundtrack implies. Repeating, short, peaceful, serene piano themes. I personally had a fantastic BOTW experience, and regularly listen to the OST. Every change made was done tastefully. People find anything to complain about, though.

Link8304: [TLDR warning, Spoiler Warning] My dream for what would happen post-final battle was that, after Ganon takes the final hit head on, the more epic parts (Main theme/Zelda's lullaby) of this song come into play as the Malice breaks apart Ganon while dissipating. You'd be left with a reformed Hyrule Castle, as it was 10,000 years ago. You'd be able to refight the blights and calamity if you so chose, but ultimately the castle would be back to normal. You could approach the spirits of the four champions in their respective hometowns to refight the blights and replay the Divine Beasts, while Zelda would stay in the Sanctum, allowing you to travel back in time to the Calamity-infused Castle to fight Ganon once more, all while peace would take over the kingdom. All those people who promised or asked things of Link for after his epic win against Ganon? He could now do. For example, the Gerudo Soldier Training Program; the Military leader would allow you to finally take part in the program, as you have now completed your task.

  343. I. J.: Funny enough, the best I can equate upon a first listening for the Shrine Battle theme is that the development section alternates between 7/8 and 6/8! This soundtrack has a lot more less common and downright unusual mixed meter in it, and it's incredibly well done!

  348. SethTheMage: The 5/4 time reminds me of Gustav Holst's Mars, the Bringer of War. That, combined with the beat of the marching boots give me a definite wartime feeling. Link, Zelda, and Ganon's themes are all woven in beautifully to show that all of them are important in the upcoming battle. On the outside, the melody is tragic and ominous to show the cruel fate of Hyrule Castle and the danger of scaling its walls, but Link's theme reminds us that there is still a glimmer of hope for Hyrule. On the inside, the arrangement is faint and etherial, representing the ghosts of the past and the lives that once exsisted within the walls; the distant echo of Zelda's Lullaby reminds us that despite her efforts to hold Ganon at bay for the past 100 years, Zelda's strength is fading fast and she will not be able to hold him much longer. This track is brilliantly composed and is a perfect buildup to the climax of the game.

The second number indicates which note is getting that beat. So, in a 4/4 time signature (which is the most common time signature in music), there are 4 beats to a measure and a quarter note gets the beat: [1-2-3-4] [1-2-3-4]. In 3/4 time (that's a waltz), there are 3 beats to a measure and a quarter note gets the beat. [1-2-3] [1-2-3]. In a 5/4 signature (the mission impossible theme is the most famous one), there are 5 beats to a measure and the quarter note gets the beat [1-2-3-4-5] [1-2-3-4-5-]. In this Hyrule castle theme, the time signature goes from 5/4 to 6/4 and back so it will go [1-2-3-4-5][1-2-3-4-5-][1-2-3-4-5-6-][1-2-3-4-5] with the quarter note getting the beat. Not sure if it makes sense but if you look up time signatures on youtube, there will be people who can explain it much better than i did because I didn't explain note values (quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, etc).   358. Jen Chough: Nah, the intermittent music and silence was perfect for the mood of the game. You cannot have bombastic, adventurous music playing while you're traipsing through BOTW's Hyrule field. It's post-apocalyptic. Civilization has been destroyed and pushed to the fringes of the world. Your friends and family are all dead, save one. Your memories and the life you once knew, gone. Ruins everywhere. Reminders of your failure still roam around Hryule and ghosts of memories follow you along. This is a melancholic Hyrule in which nature has taken over. The quiet of BOTW is what enables you to hear the wind blow through the blades of grass, to hear Kass playing in the distance so you can seek him out. It helps you hear a snoring Hinox on the level above you. It pricks your ears to the sound of a hidden Korok rattling its seeds. The music, when it does come in, fits the mood perfectly. When it wasn't there, it made you think why. Hearing Link's footsteps as he ran across the world was at once lonely and inspiring.

I believe that experiencing stuff with a blank mind is just the best way to experience anything. The surprise of finding something for the first time, of not knowing and then knowing, of being afraid of something and then overcoming that fear, figthing and beating and an enemy for the first time.. I remember being afraid of going to hyrule castle at the beginning of the game, but at the same time wanting sooo badly to go there, wondering what's going on there, what would I find, etc, the aura of mistique was so powerful.
